Knocking Out the Three Delays: Improving Survival
When someone needs medical care, three things must happen:
(1) A family must recognize the need to seek care and make the decision to do so. (2) They must be able to physically reach a health facility; and (3) The health center must provide appropriate and high-quality care. In Uganda, broken systems often impact these elements. Lack of education, some traditional practices, poor road infrastructure, extreme poverty, staff and supply shortages, and lack of continuing medical education combine to make life harrowing for many people. Delays in these actions are what is called the "Three Delays" model. SAFE works to improve baseline health and development through system-strengthening, employing methods that prioritizes reducing the Three Delays across the lifespan:
