The SAFE Communities Model

Receiving life-saving medical care requires that someone recognize the need to seek care and make the decision to do so; that they physically reach a facility capable of providing the care they need; and that they provide the right care by the right person at the right time with the right materials. In many developing countries, broken systems often impact each of these elements. Low education limits knowledge and decision-making. Poor road infrastructure and extreme poverty impact the accessibility of the healthcare system. Staff and supply shortages, lack of specialized training and few opportunities for continuing medical education contribute to low quality of care. These elements combine to make life harrowing for many people.

The SAFE Community Foundation (SAFE) addresses these circumstances through a comprehensive approach to system-strengthening that leverages donor funds to create sustainable solutions whenever possible. In such circumstances, we prioritize social innovations that generate funding to sustain themselves, profits from which can fund additional charitable activities, and lead to strengthened systems. We currently focus on educational, healthcare, and public health systems.

SAFE also recognizes that some community needs require ongoing support--particularly in terms of medical training and specialized medical care. This is why we also incorporate U.S. medical volunteers who partner with our Ugandan medical partners to provide continuing medical education, specialized training, equipment, and quality assurance/improvement initiatives. In this way, SAFE improves broken systems while also prioritizing real people right now. Our impact is therefore both immediate and long-term.
