Education in Uganda is "public" (provided for free) only through sixth grade, and attending even those primary years require that a family provide a uniform, money for lunch, school supplies, and books. Many families cannot afford those items, which leaves many children--especially girls--unable to attend. Junior high and high school require tuition and fees. This means that a quality education is not possible for the majority of the population. 

SAFE is responsive to the needs of the communities we serve, and education is everything to many of those communities. It represents the most sustainable solution to poverty and public health challenges. This is why SAFE provides social innovation training, seed money for self-sustaining student businesses, and sometimes scholastic support (may include school supplies, books, room and board, or tuition) to students from elementary school through university. Direct support is provided most often to students who are seeking to enter medicine or public health and those who have no other means of accessing education on their own.
